Full Job Description

We now have an opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

The Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development and construction of the equipment required to enable X ray production for Scientific research. This includes technologies such as Robotics and Motor driven automation for handling of scientific samples.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting / producing electrical designs for a variety of projects including, Motor Controls, Vacuum pumping and heating systems, temperature and flow for Plant monitoring, relay logic and interlocking for small automation tasks.


  • Developing CAD schematics, hook-ups, and other electrical design documentation.


  • Assisting in / carrying out procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.


  • Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentation on projects.


  • Developing an awareness of relevant British, European International and company standards and understand the implications on design.


  • Liaising with system owners to gain experience in technologies such as programmable logic controllers, motion controls, distributed I/O, instrumentation, and pneumatic controls.


  • Producing high quality detailed electrical drawings.


  • Contributing to design reviews and system verification and validation.

    Suitable candidates will have a background in an Electrical Engineering discipline. We encourage time served apprentice applicants that have obtained at least Level 3 qualifications in Advanced Engineering to apply along with Graduate Engineers. We can offer advanced level 6 apprenticeships to upskill candidates as required.


  • You will be passionate about a career in electrical engineer with some experience of design, manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of Electrical systems. You will also demonstrate basic understanding of control systems and electrical designs methodology, with working knowledge of a CAD system.

    You will demonstrate design understanding in at least one of the following areas:
  • Electrical Rack build & design.


  • Motor control systems driving Stepper, Servo or DC motors.


  • Vacuum control systems.


  • Low Voltage distribution systems.


  • Relay and interlock logic.


  • You will also demonstrate:
  • Ability to produce working designs, e.g., electrical diagrams, parts lists, and general assembly drawings.


  • Good understanding of Electrical engineering fundamentals.


  • Grasp of essential health and safety context.
