Full Job Description

We would welcome applications from existing or newly trained Consultants who have an interest in holistic elderly care and encourage applicants who are dual trained in Geriatric & General Medicine. The position is to join our General Medicine service multidisciplinary team with close links to the Elderly Medicine Service. There are a number of benefits working as part of the Resilience team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital including:

  • Encouragement and support to work as part of an established multidisciplinary team and will help develop new models of care

  • Opportunity for consultants with a specialist interest and additional skills to promote and develop the service in order to improve diagnosis and management - Encouraging an interest in surgical liaison and perioperative medicine

  • Development and opportunity to take a leading role in infection, prevention and control

  • Adoption of clinical leadership role or development/training in clinical leadership

  • Opportunities to visit a tertiary centre to develop special clinical interests, This post provides an exciting opportunity to join a newly established General Medicine service with close links to the Elderly Medicine service. The General Medicine service will encompass a team of 3 Consultants, 1 Registrar and 4 juniors who will provide care to the following:

  • One 31 bedded General Medical Ward

  • One 17 bedded General Medical Ward

  • Medical Outliers located on Surgical Wards


  • To lead and motivate the multidisciplinary team within his/her ward area in order to deliver effective patient-focused interventions and timely discharge planning.

    To create and maintain excellent working relationships with their own team, management team and external agencies such as community providers and CCGs. This includes effective communication in line with the Trust values

    To engage fully in development of services to meet the anticipated future challenges of the ageing population.

    To lead on and drive forward innovations within service area.

    To support consultant colleagues in the department in the delivery of their services where necessary.

    The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) provides a full range of general acute, outpatient and diagnostic services at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop's Stortford, and St Margaret's Hospital in Epping.

    We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Epping. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.
