Full Job Description

This role exists to research and create fundamental user interface principles for interaction design for future JLR products. This centres around developing an in depth knowledge and understanding of the science of human behaviour in the vehicle, and using this knowledge to design future interface systems for JLR products. This will include running scientific experiments to validate the basic principles of user interaction in the vehicle, and using the output of this work to define the operation principles of vehicle based user interfaces that take into account key principles taken from Psychology, Human Factors and cognitive science. Building up a naturalistic understanding of how users interact in cars and using this to create highly effective interface systems.

Working within an automotive field requires consideration of the impact of in-vehicle systems on the driving task and hence designing systems that support a driver to carry out this task is the primary aim.

This role will work as part of a team including both interaction designers and behaviour specialists who will work together to develop future interface systems from the ground up and validated all the way through to real world environments.

What you'll need

In this exciting yet challenging role, you will work as part of an agile team developing scientific principles for future JLR vehicle user interfaces. You will build upon JLR operation principles for user interface design based on a combination of the underlying science, the latest standards and guidance provided by the industry on attention and driver distraction. You will guide designers on scientific foundations and make clear recommendations of how to achieve targets.

One of the paramount aspects to this position, is the ability to plan and lead research into user behaviour in the automotive field. You will design and execute experiments using a variety of methods appropriate for the activity. You will work collaboratively with interaction designers and behaviour specialists to plan testing activities and to interpret testing outcome to allow for refinement of designs accordingly.

  • Batchelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Human Computer Interaction, Product Design (with a focus on user interfaces), Psychology, Human Factors / Ergonomics, with a particular interest in fundamental research into in-vehicle interface systems

  • Experience of carrying out user interface research and familiar with the science of human interaction in the vehicle and able to help interpret qualitative and quantitative data to improve and iterate design solutions.

  • Familiar with a human-centred design process

Bring all this to the home of premium innovation, and you'll find the opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, membership of a competitive pension plan and performance related bonus scheme. All this and more makes JLR the perfect place to continue your journey.

  • This role may offer the opportunity for hybrid working where you can split your time between working from home and in the office. At JLR, hybrid working is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement providing employees with more choice and flexibility around how, when and where they work, if suitable for their role. Further details can be discussed with the Hiring Manager at interview stage.

JLR is committed to equal opportunity for all.
