Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen at North Herts Council for an entry-level position within the Policy & Strategy team. Duties will include:

  • Supporting the team to develop strategic policy and research on a range of issues, including community engagement, environmental issues, the equalities agenda, climate and sustainability, partnership engagement, rural and social inclusion, all of which seek to improve the quality of life in North Hertfordshire.

  • Assisting the analysis of data to ensure that our policy work is informed and evidence-based.

  • Supporting the work to develop a new Council plan and priorities.

  • Working and engaging with colleagues, councillors, and external partners on the above-mentioned topics as relevant.

  • Supporting the work on Climate Change and Environmental initiatives and co-ordination of council wide approaches to reduce carbon emissions.

  • Assisting the team in gathering information for the Annual Governance Assessment and Statement.

  • Supporting the assessment of Council decision-making and its impacts.

  • Undertaking relevant administrative activities, including note-taking and sending emails.

  • Dealing with general enquiries into the service area, via the telephone, email, social media, letter, or in person.

  • Undertaking other duties which may arise or be delegated from time to time.


  • As part of your employment, you will also study for and complete a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship.

  • Have an interest in local government and/or policy development.

  • Be an effective team player.

  • Be able to work independently and self-motivate.

  • Be a good communicator.

  • Have good analytical, written communication, and basic numeracy skills.
